Our Union's Timeline as of December 11, 2025

The following is a timeline of our union's formation, including updates on our relationship with leadership.

EDF Together started, like all unions, through coworkers talking about how to improve their workplace.

April 24th, 2025: EDF leadership learns of union organizing.

HR hosts a one-sided Town Hall in an effort to dissuade EDFers from unionizing.

April - December: Staff continue organizing toward a better workplace.

A supermajority of eligible staff sign official union authorization cards.

December 2nd: Launch Day! EDF Together goes public.

  • We asked EDF leadership (otherwise known as the "Executive Management Team" or "EMT") for voluntary recognition and a response by Dec. 4th at 5pm ET so we can move on to negotiate eligibility.
  • Public supporters send over 1,800 letters to EDF leadership, asking for voluntary recognition.
  • In the spirit of transparency, EDF Together hosts daily town halls for all staff to ask questions about the union.

December 4th: Our requested deadline for voluntary recognition passes.

EDF leadership sends an email saying that they’ve received the petition, but do not respond to the request for recognition. EDF Together remains committed to engaging constructively at every step.

December 5th: Employees take over Slack.

Over 120 EDF staff send positive messages of support in internal channels throughout the entire workday, stating why they want a union at EDF. You can read some on our testimonials page.

December 9th: EDF asks the NLRB to extend their deadline.

Despite knowing about union organizing for 9+ months, EDF leadership steps out of line with similar nonprofits and chooses to formally delay by requesting a 6-day extension with the National Labor Relations Board. The extension is granted. The hearing is now scheduled for Tuesday, December 16th.

December 10th:  EMT's legal counsel returns list of who they think is eligible for union.

Executive Management returns a list of who they think is provisionally eligible for the staff union. This list is currently under review as of December 11 by EDF Together and our legal representation at WBNG. More than 100 staff positions are in dispute, including all employees of MethaneSAT.

December 11th: EDF Together and Executive Management Team agree to a meeting

EMT and EDF Together agree to conduct a meeting on the eligibility of contested staff virtually on Friday, December 12. We will share updates when it's appropriate.

Present:

We continue negotiating with EDF leadership to ensure EDFers get the strong union we deserve.

🏁 December 16: NLRB Deadline. 🏁

The path forward: EDF Leadership must choose a path. Either way, with a supermajority, EDF Together will be certified.

Path 1: Voluntary Recognition (Preferred)Path 2: Redundant Ballot Election

Union authorization cards are counted by a neutral third party to confirm a majority of eligible staff have signed.
