Warehouse Workers for Justice Staff Announce New Union

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
November 12, 2021

Chicago, Illinois —  Staff members at Warehouse Workers for Justice (WWJ), a Chicago area worker center fighting to win “stable, living wage jobs with dignity” for warehouse and logistics workers in Illinois, have unionized with the Chicago NewsGuild, TNG-CWA Local 34071. Union member Brandin McDonald spoke to the excitement of all Warehouse Workers for Justice Union (WWJU) members: “change is in the air, and we have to fight for it!”

The WWJU launched on Monday, Nov. 8, with overwhelming, near-unanimous support from all levels of staff. As of Wednesday, Nov. 10, the WWJU is in the process of negotiating a Voluntary Recognition Agreement with management. Once an agreement is reached, we look forward to beginning the work of negotiating the contract we deserve while continuing to support warehouse workers in their fight to secure stable and life-sustaining jobs.

The WWJU is committed to bargaining for good, reliable jobs aligned with our mission as a workers’ center. “[Our union contract] would provide us with the same protections that we are fighting to get for other Black and Brown workers in the community,” said WWJU member Kendra Landfair. “As leaders in the labor movement in Will County, we have to lead by example.”

WWJ serves an important role in the region, organizing logistics and distribution workers to fight for fair pay, paid leave, safe working conditions, and “a voice at the workplace” (www.ww4j.org). WWJU member Violeta Thompson looks forward to a contract that sets a strong example for the workers WWJU organizes: “being part of a labor organization, I am excited to see a just contract that we as labor organizers can reference to inspire warehouse workers to take action in their workplaces as well.”

The WWJU is ready to build a more efficient, welcoming, and fair workplace for all who come through WWJ. Our members look forward to the support of the greater Chicago community and labor movement in our fight for a just and equitable workplace.
