Mission Statement

For more than a decade, the local nonprofit newsroom the San Francisco Public Press has reported on gaps that affect our community’s everyday life, from homelessness to healthcare, while trying to amplify the voices of those who are often overlooked in mainstream media. With growing threats to democracy and a rapidly shifting political landscape, our work as reporters is vital. That’s why our staff is coming together to form a union.

This unionizing effort aims to create structure and sustainability. As journalists, we care deeply about fairness and a clear system of checks and balances. A union ensures that the same accountability exists internally and provides frameworks: clear expectations, a grievance process with independent oversight and protections that allow staff to raise professional concerns.

Through our union, we want a say in decisions that impact staff. We want to produce reporting in a stable, supportive workplace that enables us to do our best, provides opportunities for career growth and encourages us to stay.

These tools strengthen our organization’s mission by aligning internal practices with the public-interest values we report on every day and by ensuring the people doing the work are supported, protected and heard.

Newsroom leadership has voluntarily recognized our union. We are proud members of the Pacific Media Workers Guild, Local 39521 The NewsGuild — Communications Workers of America.
