Working America continues to focus on slowing the rapid spread of coronavirus with education and resources to help you and your family during the global pandemic and the resulting economic fallout.

COVID-19 has hit working families hard. Between job loss, health care issues and sudden disruptions in school schedules, working families are left with a lot of uncertainty right now.

Here are resources to help make these turbulent times a little easier to navigate.

EMPLOYMENT

If you:

  • Need help applying for unemployment insurance benefits

  • Want more information about paid sick leave in your state

  • Need emergency housing or food assistance

  • Have questions about other economic relief options that might be available to you

Visit the AFL-CIO resources page: aflcio.org/covid-19/state-resources

HOME SCHOOLING

School closures were critical for keeping our communities safe and slowing the spread of coronavirus, but for families with school-age kids, learning how to support students’ distance learning can be difficult. That’s why the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) has developed materials to provide working families with helpful lessons and tools for kids in pre-K through 12th grade who are now learning at home while coping with the COVID-19 pandemic.

You can find their materials here: sharemylesson.com/coronavirus/parents

(NOTE: These resources are intended to supplement what your child’s teacher or school has already provided.)

HEALTH CARE

If you’ve lost your health coverage and are looking for a new plan or wondering how to apply to programs like CHIP or Medicaid, Working America Health Care can help.

With Working America Health Care, you can speak with licensed professionals who may be able to help you understand your health care options.

You can call 844-961-9637 to speak with a recommended licensed professional who can help answer your coverage questions.

SOCIAL SERVICES

211 provides the most comprehensive source of local social services information in the U.S. Call 2-1-1 from any cellphone or landline to speak with a community resource specialist in your area who will help you find services and resources that are available to you.

PROTECT THE POSTAL SERVICE

During this pandemic, we’re depending on the Postal Service for everything from medicine and essential goods to absentee ballots. The USPS has always been our emergency distribution system when our country is in crisis.

Unfortunately, this reliable system is now under threat. The coronavirus shutdown is plummeting USPS revenues while increasing costs. The Postal Service could run out of money as early as June and the Trump administration is trying to undermine its stability and effectiveness so private companies can profit. The loss of the USPS would shatter our response to the coronavirus pandemic, hit already weakened businesses and harm communities.
